Litter picking is a core activity for the group. Unfortunately there are still too many people who choose to ignore litter bins, but things are improving. We do a litter patrol in the centre of the town every Saturday morning, and on Wednesday evenings during the summer months as well. We have an annual river clean up which is well supported by local families who turn up for the day.
STT realise the importance of reaching out to other like-minded community groups, who want the best for their community. We have forged links with Fingal Dog Owners, Swords Pickers and Fingal Volunteers. During Mental Care Awareness Month October 2021, we became involved with Eve Plantmarket.
Over the years, STT have developed a great relationship with Fingal Community College and St Finian’s Secondary School. Many of their Transition Year students choose to work with us over 26 sessions to achieve their Gaisce awards. It’s a wonderful opportunity for young and old to mingle socially, and to share their interest in their local environment.
This year (2022) we have been liaising with St Michael’s House in Swords, who now help us in keeping our streets free of litter. Students at Swords National Learning Network have also become involved with STT, and are taking pride in keeping their local area spotless.
Local businesses, interested in team-building have asked to become involved in our activities. For example on April 20, 2022, a large group of young Kuehne-Nagel employees joined us for several hours of work. Half were involved in a gardening project, and half did some litter-picking around our town.
Plaza Village power wash
Noel, our Tidiness and Litter Control officer, approached Purple Properties who manage Plaza Village and requested that they power clean that area. On May 2nd STT members came to see the result and were very impressed with their efforts.
Our latest acquisition got its first trial run on April 6th 2019. This machine is intended to clear the streets of small litter items, especially cigarette butts.
