STT members have previously participated in WaterBlitz events, organised by DCU Water Institute. These provided valuable experiences in taking water samples; recording findings accurately, and in understanding the results. These skills are very relevant to our latest water project.
In February 2023, we were informed about a new initiative between ChangeX and Fresh Water Watch (FWW).
They were planning to run a water monitoring programme, and were looking for expressions of interest. The organisers were keen to put forward the names of a number of groups across Ireland for consideration. Only six could be selected. So STT was delighted to have been chosen this year.
FRESH water Watch is a global project run by Earthwatch Europe. It’s an environmental charity, whose aim is to empower people around the world to measure the health of their local waterways using scientifically-sound methods. These accurate results could be used to influence management authorities to improve water quality.
STT formed a subgroup of 5 members led by Ramune Kuzminiene. They applied to ChangeX for funding, which was granted after a successful 30 day challenge.
The first part of this payment has been received. The remainder will be granted, once our group has reported back in a few months time on the impact of our project.
Our 5 group members will be taking water samples once a month for one year. Each person will be responsible for two locations: 6 spots in the Ward River, 2 spots in the Broadmeadow River and 2 spots in the estuary.
The first water testing took place on May 20, 2023.
